Birthday Dinner

For my birthday, Dan surprised me with a dinner at Beckta, one of the city’s top restaurants.

It was a wonderful evening of indulgence in both fine food and fine wine. The restaurant is housed in an old house, and is small and cozy. It’s the kind of place where you get between-course treats compliments of the chef, where they refold your napkin when you leave to go to the washroom, and where instead of a basket of bread you get a bread girl who circulates between tables with a platter of tiny slices of delicious artisanal breads.

Dan often accuses me of being a foodie, and when I go to a place like this, I have to agree. I love good food. And Beckta didn’t disappoint. One thing that often strikes me at nicer restaurants is how small the portions seem – “It will never be enough!” you think. But it is! A big disappointment for me with most “average” restaurant visits is that I’m so stuffed after my meal, I never want to order dessert. Here, we shared an appetizer and both had desserts, and I was simply pleasantly full at the end of the evening. Yay for variety!

[I apologize in advance for the quality of the pictures - they had some serious mood lighting (read - lack of light) going on, and I didn't want to be "that person" whose camera flash is going off every 5 seconds]

For the appetizer, we went all out and order the foie gras. Mmmmmm. It was the first time for both of us, and it was delicious! Incredibly filling, though, and so buttery/rich that it’s not something I would indulge in very often, even if the price tag wasn’t a deterrent.

Dan had the quail (cornish hen?), which came with a pork belly, beet salsa (I appreciated it way more than he did!), on a bed of greens which I can no longer remember (broccoli rabe?).

On the other hand, I went for the lobster, which came on a bed of delectable smooth polenta, mushrooms, and a balsamic-ey sauce. I really need to plan that trip out east, because I do love my lobster.

Remember how I said that we still had room for dessert? I had a holiday-themed eggnog crème brulée with caramelized chestnuts, while hubby had a sugar tart (which was probably the first time I really appreciated a sugar tart, as this one didn’t immediately make my teeth seize up) with powdered olive oil.

What is powdered olive oil, one might ask? We did as well! As far as the waiter could explain (after checking with the kitchen) it involved cornstarch, tapioca and olive oil… but I’m still not clear on the process.

I also had a whopping two glasses of wine, and they were both amazing (and previously unknown) – Beckta’s other claim to fame is as a wine bar, and it did not disappoint.

It’s definitely a place we’ll keep in mind for future special occasions, but sadly it is a bit on the expensive side for regular outings. I’ve also read that they have a sister restaurant named Play, run by the same people but billed as being more casual, so we may check that one out at some point as well.

Finally – pictures!

A week and a half ago, the guys got together and rented the ice at Scotiabank Place to hold a birthday game for Paul. I have (finally) uploaded the pictures.

The sad thing is that I had the editing done by the end of last weekend – all except for resizing, that is. And that’s what held me up for the next week. I spent way more time than necessary researching ways to write Gimp scripts (well, I was also curious) and playing around with some, until finally stumbling on a plug-in that does exactly what I wanted. I don’t know how I feel about going back and re-learning Scheme, but I probably will do it as my experience with editing expands. Now that is one language I’m very surprised to be even considering using outside the classroom! Who knew?!

A bunch of fans showed up, too – although I think we would have needed a few more thousand friends to really make this place sound good.

Fun weekend

It was such a fun weekend, I’ve finally been jolted out of my posting break. Maybe we need Josh around more (yes, even Josh came to visit!)

First of all, Friday started it off with a bang as we went out to celebrate Dan’s birthday and the Olympic opening ceremony. We coined the term “full-contact sushi” after a few misplaced and accidental bumps as people were reaching across the table for a piece of sushi. Good fun. The opening ceremony took forever, and I remembered why I almost never watch them – the 2 hours of teams filing through the stadium! We had to leave the pub to get home just as it was getting to the most anticipated moment of the show, since the boys just HAD to have cake at that exact moment. Luckily, we walked in the door just as they were lighting the torch.

On Saturday was Jen’s bachelorette party. What a good time! We started off the evening with a wine tasting led by a sommelier (yes, spellcheck, I mean” sommelier”, not “smelter”; no joke, that is the suggested correction), and accompanied by yummy foods made by everyone present. Karaoke was next, and I’m still debating whether to post the video of Boj’s… inimitable… performance. Jen had a checklist of things to do before we let her get married, and she got through most of them brilliantly – including getting 3 guys’ phone numbers. :) We tried to see how many more she could get, but for some reason she didn’t want to. Guess she somehow already knows that 1 fiancé and 3 boyfriends is too much to juggle!!

Today was Family Day, wrapping up a much-awaited long weekend. Since federal employees aren’t supposed to have families, Dan did not have today off. My plan was mostly to finish Breaking Dawn, the last of the Twilight books, do a whole bunch of errands, and watch the Olympics. I have to say I’m actually undecided on whether I like this one or the third book better. It was interesting to see some more character development, as well as vampire history explained. Far-fetched? Maybe. Not enough Jacob? Definitely. But a good 2-day read, anyway.

If you know me, you could probably expect me to have had a to-do list and schedule even for a day off. Dan kicked it off track first thing in the morning, when he didn’t leave for work on time. See, I had been counting on being woken up by him at 7, napping for an hour and a bit, and then getting up before 8:30. You know, to have time to be productive. Instead, both of us crawled out of bed by 10, and he eventually headed off to work. I even met up with him for lunch at the Sconewitch downtown, which is a wonderfully eclectic spot for a wholesome and filling lunch. I headed to Bridgehead to finish my book, where I finally threw my schedule out the window when I unexpectedly ran into Hubert, and I spent my coffee chatting instead of reading. Unplanned days can be fun, too! Yay for unplaned-ness!

One thing that frustrated me today was the bus. Or rather, the people on the bus. Seriously, people of Ottawa – you have to let go of the notion that you’re entitled to a 1-meter radius personal space circle on a bus. Go visit Europe, or Japan, or, hell, even New York, to see what a FULL rush-hour bus actually looks like.

Coming up – I still haven’t posted about the Alpaca Farm visit!
