Until just a few days I had been sworn to secrecy, so wasn’t able to share this project even though it was done. Well, now the recipient (Dan’s niece Sophie) has received her bunny, so I can write about it at will!
So, with Sophie’s birthday coming up, Dan was going to make her a gift. I won’t tell you what it is, since I don’t know if he’s given it to her yet (and I don’t want to ruin the surprise for Steph & Andrea). Anyhow, Dan asked me to “make a bag or something” to put the … in. Of course, having made a bunch for christmas already, “a bag” sounded boring – so I decided to go the extra step and make a stuffed toy. From my own childhood I remembered having a much-loved (but much smaller) bunny of my own. Everyone loves bunnies – at least of the stuffed variety, I should add, before the gardeners descend on me en masse to complain about voracious rabbits destroying their gardens.
So, I started with a pattern. The pieces printed out on the same sheet of paper, which took a bit of work to figure out which boundaries belonged to which piece. Not having any proper pattern paper, I improvised with wax paper.

To my delight, I had all the fabric I needed lying around. Don’t worry, I didn’t buy the bright pink fabric myself – it was left lying around by the previous homeowners. I’m glad my packrat brain won that battle, and I packed it away in the craft room instead of throwing it out. The white fabric was left over from a blanket I had made for Trevor, so it was soft and fluffy – perfect for a bunny’s tummy and ears!
This is also about the point where I had a vague inkling that perhaps we had already given Sophie a stuffed bunny (from Build-a-Bear) on another occasion – but decided to forge ahead. I mean, c’mon – my bunny has multi-coloured ears!

It took me longer than the “couple of hours” the pattern advertised, but I’m pretty happy with the result. It was a fun learning experience, and I hope a little girl will be very happy with her bunny. For at least a few days.
